Chianti DOCG

As is the case with most historic wines, there are various theories about the origin of the name: according to some accounts, it could derive from the Latin term “clangor” (noise), recalling the sound of hunting horns; according to other versions, the name could come from the Etruscan “clante,” a name of Etruscan families widespread in the area. Supporting this hypothesis are Etruscan and Roman testimonies that demonstrate ancient winemaking traditions, although the first documents in which the name Chianti identifies a specific wine production area date back to the 13th century. The first notarial document referring to wine produced in this area as Chianti dates back to 1398.
